In addition to standard products such as mailing tubes and tape cores, at Western Container Corporation, our engineers can develop custom designs for a range of specialty applications. The part shown here is used by a customer in the automotive industry as a spacer for wheel hubs. This customer orders three different sizes of spacers, which range in inner diameter from 4.75" to 5.312". Specialized tooling was designed and fabricated to produce the custom sized cores for this project. All spacers are created by winding recycled brown Kraft paper to the desired 0.500" wall thickness, which provides the necessary strength to withstand the weight of the hubs during shipping. The lengths are cut using an in-line knife cutting and re-cutting process to produce spacers in 0.75", 1.00", and 1.52" lengths, holding tolerances as tight as ±0.005" during the re-cutting process.
Initial testing was completed on all products using time stamped data collection on all machines to verify conformance to customer specifications. This is a high volume part that is produced for a local vendor, and included a custom stocking program. We can customize stocking programs according to customers' needs to ensure customers always have the product they need without requiring them to carry an excess of inventory. We manufacture approximately 250,000 of these spacers per year in various sizes, with an average lead time of 3 to 5 days.
