Custom Converting Cores

Converting Cores

A converting core is a strong paper core around which a product is wrapped, like tape. These cores are usually manufactured in long lengths and then cut down into smaller sizes for individual use once they have been wound with a product by the customer. Because converting cores hold a product, and because they need to be precisely cut without bending, it's important that they are strong.

Converting Cores at Western Container

At Western Container, we manufacture tightly wound converting cores in a wide range of sizes that can be used in many different applications without damaging the product.

Cost Effective and Quality

Western Container Corporation continues to drive costs down while combining top-notch equipment with people in their custom film core and converting core lines. Western will introduce their new SPCO Evolution multi-knife winding line in 2014 which introduces a single step cutting process with accurate lengths for those converting applications where tight tolerances are a must.

Our converting and film cores’ are constructed from paper ply’s of various thicknesses to achieve your required dimensional tolerances and crush rating. Each core is designed with your application in mind while maintaining your required flat crush value.

Available Material & Sizes

Western offers film cores and converting cores from 0.5" to 24" in diameter, with regular Kraft liner material. Outer surfaces may be glazed Kraft or printed with 1 color and up to 4 color off-line printing. Cores may be .192" to 636" long and may have wall thicknesses ranging from .036" to .750". Depending on dimensions, tolerances may be as precise as ± .010" or ± .025" depending on diameter/wall thickness and internal dimension.

Quality Assurance

Compression and flat crush tests, as well as automated quality tracking systems ensure that output is of the highest quality and strength. Orders may be small or large volume, with lead times averaging between 2 and 5 days. Make use of what we have to offer today, and choose Western Container for converting and film cores.

Converting Core Applications

Converting cores are mounted on a winder and used to roll many products in many different industries, including:

  • Packaging supplies
  • Plastic wrap
  • Paper sheets for print shops

Structural Requirements for High Performance Converting Cores

Converting cores must maintain stability during winding, slitting, and downstream processing, especially when used with films, papers, foils, and other materials that place varying levels of tension on the core. Their structural behavior is influenced by fiber density, adhesive formulation, and winding pressure, all of which determine how well the core resists deformation during high speed production. Consistent wall construction helps prevent ovality, telescoping, and crushing, supporting predictable performance across long production runs.

Dimensional Accuracy for High Speed Converting Lines

Modern converting equipment relies on precise core dimensions to maintain alignment, tension control, and roll geometry. Length accuracy, ID roundness, and cut edge quality all influence how smoothly the roll mounts and unwinds. Multi knife winding systems and precision re cutting equipment help achieve consistent tolerances, reducing machine stoppages and improving throughput. Accurate dimensions also support compatibility with automated packaging and slitting systems, where even minor deviations can affect roll quality.

Material Behavior Under Load and Environmental Exposure

Paperboard used in converting cores must withstand compression, torque, and environmental changes without losing shape. Variations in humidity or temperature can influence fiber expansion, making material selection an important factor in long term stability. Wall thickness and ply configuration determine how the core responds to radial pressure during winding, especially for heavy or wide rolls. Surface finishes such as glazed Kraft or printed wraps help manage friction, protect the outer surface, and support product identification.

Customization for Application Specific Requirements

Different industries require converting cores with unique combinations of strength, finish, and dimensional characteristics. Film producers may need smooth interior surfaces to protect delicate substrates, while packaging manufacturers may prioritize reinforced walls for heavier materials. Custom printing supports branding and inventory management, while tailored lengths and diameters ensure compatibility with existing equipment. The ability to configure cores for specific workflows helps reduce waste and improve operational efficiency.

FAQ

How Do Dimensional Tolerances Affect Converting Performance?

Tight tolerances help maintain roll alignment, prevent vibration, and support smooth operation on high speed converting lines.

What Determines the Strength of a Converting Core?

Strength is influenced by material density, wall thickness, ply configuration, and the adhesive system used during construction.

Why Is Cut Quality Important for Converting Applications?

Clean, square cuts help the core mount securely on winding equipment, reduce roll deformation, and support consistent roll formation.

Can Converting Cores Be Customized for Specific Equipment?

Yes. Diameters, lengths, wall thicknesses, and surface finishes can be tailored to match equipment requirements and improve handling performance.
